Coach Resources
All head coaches, game-day coaches, assistant coaches, and instructors are required to initiate and provide proof of successfully completing a background check by an independent private company from USA Wrestling.
All head coaches, game-day coaches, assistant coaches, and instructors are required to review online materials related to USA Wrestling SafeSport policies and procedures, and provide proof of completion.
Head coaches, and select assistant coaches, are required to obtain a USA Wrestling coach leader card.

- Ensure that all DYS coaches and assistant coaches completed background checks
- Avoid lengthy periods of time alone with minors
- Have another adult present when substantive discussions commence
- Report abuse within 24 hours in accordance with USA Wrestling SafeSport training
Background checks are required for the following persons
- All head coaches
- All assistant coaches
USA coach cards are required for the following persons:
- Head coaches obtain a USA coach card after completing the background check
- No more than two assistant coaches after completing the background check
Notes
- Background checks are conducted privately by USA Wrestling affiliate companies
- DYS management are not involved in the background investigation process
- DYS reimburses background checks for coaches that are successfully completed
- DYS reimburses coach cards for two assistant coaches in each room as designated by the head coach
Requirements and Notes
All head coaches and assistant coaches are required to intiate and complete a background check in accordance with the USA Wrestling National process.
Investigations are conducted by USA affiliate companies in a private manner. DYS management and staff are not involved with the process at all. Nor is any of the results shared with DYS personnel.
Once complete, adults have the ability to decide whether or not to:
- share results of the investigation, or
- continue to become a coach
All coaches are required to provide proof of successful investigations/certificates to the DYS commissioner in order to coach DYS youth wrestlers.
Background investigations and certifications
All adults that want to coach are required to obtain a certificate or email notification that shows a successful completion of the background evaluation, and shall come from the private process identified on the USA Wrestling website.
The renewal period begins September 1st of each year regardless of the date of purchase for either the background check or coach card.
The background check is good for two years ending August 31st of the subsequent year.
The coach card may be purchased for a one year or a two year period also ending on August 31st. Some coach cards may be purchased for a two year period, however, DYS only provides reimbursements for a one year period.

DYS Wrestling Coaches
- Are required to read all materails on this tab, submit a signed coded of conduct agreement to DYS commissioner, review all USA SafeSport policies, and submit certificates as proof to DYS commissioner showing that videos were completed.

Types of USA Wrestling Memberships
Athlete: Athlete membership is for wrestlers who practice, train, and/or compete in USA Wrestling chartered clubs and sanctioned events.
Wrestling Leader: The Wrestling Leader membership is for those individuals who wish to coach and/or officiate in USA Wrestling chartered clubs and sanctioned events. This membership is new for the 2018-19 membership season, as USA Wrestling coach memberships and officials membership are no longer available having been replaced by the Wrestling
Leader membership: Booster Club, This is NOT A VALID COMPETITOR MEMBERSHIP. If this is the type of membership you are trying to purchase please choose Athlete Membership as the Type of Membership for Purchase.
Media: Media membership is for those who wish to cover wrestling at USA Wrestling regional and/or national championships. This can be bloggers, journalists, photographers, etc. Please note that credential for each specific regional and/or national championships will be determined by USA Wrestling’s Communications Department.
Medical: Medical membership is for assigned medical personnel at USA Wrestling regional and/or national championships. Medical personnel at regional and/or national championships will be determined by USA Wrestling’s Events Department.
Sponsor/Vendor: Sponsor/vendor membership is for personnel and employees of USA Wrestling partner companies who will be attending USA Wrestling regional and/or national championships.
Event Volunteer: Event Volunteer membership is for individuals who wish to officiate at local USA Wrestling sanctioned events. This membership does not allow for one to officiate at a regional and/or national championship (Wrestling Leader membership is required for that), and does not come with any benefits of membership (i.e.: secondary sports accident coverage, USA Wrestler subscription, etc.).

There is no change in the requirement on what is needed in order to become a Wrestling Leader, but the SafeSport training is now built into the membership system so one does not have to create an account with SafeSport. This is much easier than previously, but that's the only change.
