DYS Volleyball
The DYS Volleyball Way
No matter which DYS Volleyball program an athlete participates in, the standard is the same: compete with gratitude, humility, effort, sportsmanship, and respect for the people around you.

The DYS Volleyball Culture
Grateful for Everything.
Entitled to Nothing.

Our Standard
Players, parents, and coaches all share responsibility for the DYS Volleyball experience. We believe the right attitude starts with gratitude, and we expect every member of our program to demonstrate sportsmanship, respect others, and contribute to a positive, team-first environment.
Coaches are expected to model that standard through their words and actions. Players are expected to work hard, support their teammates, respond positively to coaching, and understand that growth comes from both success and adversity.

Get Involved
We are always looking for volunteers to help support DYS Volleyball. Every bit of time and effort from our families helps keep costs down while allowing us to provide a strong, positive Volleyball experience for the players in our community. If you see a role that interests you — or even if you just have questions about what’s involved — please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to talk through it and help you find a way to get involved.

Interested in Coaching?
Coaching Clinics & Opportunities
Coaching Clinics for Volleyball are offered periodically throughout the year, particularly leading up to house league assessments. As a local, volunteer, community-based organization, we are always looking for new coaches who want to connect with their kids through coaching, reconnect with the sport they played, or just give back to the community. You provide the passion; we'll provide the training.
Although it may feel intimidating initially, coaching is a fun and rewarding experience. As coaches, we provide an environment in which players:
  • can experience constant incremental improvement in technical volleyball skills
  • can learn to be a good sport and teammate
  • can gain confidence in a safe and nurturing environment
  • can experience the principles of a growth mindset
  • can develop a lasting love for the sport of volleyball
The success of our coaches is not based on a winning or losing record. Instead, we measure success in the improvement of the players and the team and the enjoyment of the experience. We believe that winning is a byproduct that will follow these core values.

Where are practices held?
For our House Volleyball League and HEAT program, we use J. Michael Lunsford Middle School and Brambleton Middle School and have recently expanded to Willard Middle School to provide additional space. Loudoun County Parks and Recreation allocates gym space based in part on our registration numbers.
Based on practice dates, times, team assignments, and facility allocations, players from our House and HEAT programs could practice at one or more of these facilities during the season.
For Club Volleyball, practices and clinics are held at Hoops Plus, located at 45496 Ruritan Circle, Sterling, VA 20164.

When are Club tryouts and when does the Recreation season begin?
DYS Club Volleyball holds tryouts in accordance with Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association (CHRVA) guidelines.
2027 Club Season
Girls 14U and younger: October 23–27, 2026
Girls 15U and older: October 30–November 3, 2026
DYS-specific tryout dates, times, age groups, and registration information will be posted in the News & Events section of this page as they are finalized.
For current CHRVA information, visit
CHRVA Girls Volleyball.
Our House Recreation League typically begins in mid-March and concludes in early June. Preseason player assessments are generally held in late February.

Where does HEAT play its matches?
Our HEAT teams participate in the SYA travel league. SYA establishes the game schedule and match locations, so the locations may change from year to year. The HEAT season generally aligns with our Spring Recreation League.

When will teams and practice schedules be announced?
We understand that families are anxious to receive team and practice information, and we work to release it as quickly as possible.
Please keep in mind that DYS Volleyball is operated by volunteers who also have families, jobs, and other obligations. We typically have more than 200 players to place across 20 or more teams. Players are not randomly assigned. We take time to review assessments, balance teams, consider appropriate player placement, coordinate coaches, and work through scheduling conflicts.
This is also why registration asks families to identify other sports, activities, or recurring conflicts. Providing complete information during registration gives us the best opportunity to consider those conflicts while teams and schedules are being built. We appreciate your patience while that process is completed.

Why are practice days and gym options limited?
Simply put, gym space is expensive and difficult to obtain. Spring Volleyball is considered an out-of-season activity, which can result in higher facility costs and more limited availability than sports operating during their traditional season.
Loudoun County Parks and Recreation allocates facility space, and our available gym time is influenced by registration numbers and the space made available to us each year.
We continue to look for ways to expand and improve the program while keeping Volleyball as affordable as possible. The addition of Willard Middle School is one example of our ongoing effort to create more space for our players.

Why do parents help line judge and scorekeep?
This approach replaced an older system in which teams were assigned to “work” another match. Under that format, a Saturday schedule could include combinations such as play/work/play or work/play/play.
That often meant families were at the gym for approximately three hours, including an additional hour when players were required to line judge or scorekeep a match in which their team was not playing.
By having parents assist with these responsibilities during their team's game, we eliminated the separate work assignment and reduced the amount of additional time families need to remain at the gym.

What do Recreation League registration fees cover?
Registration fees help cover the cost of gym space, uniform shirts, referee expenses, and equipment such as Volleyballs and first-aid supplies.
We also work to offset program costs through fundraising and support from local businesses whenever possible. Keeping overhead and program costs under control helps us continue providing an affordable Volleyball experience for DYS families.
